Junior League of Dallas Kids in the Kitchen

As part of its 2010 initiatives, JLD continues its exciting program, Kids in the Kitchen. Kids in the Kitchen is a nationally recognized health education program that empowers youth to learn the preparation of healthy meals and educates them and their parents regarding nutrition and healthy choices. In partnership with area YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas branches, the JLD will work to impact the lives of area children for healthier lifestyles through a hands-on, interactive 12-week program to take place in the Spring of 2011.

The JLD 2010 Kids in the Kitchen program, through sponsorship from UnitedHealthcare, featured:

  • A 12-week after-school program from February through April 2010 offered at the Lakewest, White Rock Lake and Town North YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas branches.
  • YMCA staff members and Junior League of Dallas volunteers will engage youth ages 5-12 years during 3-hour sessions that include age-appropriate recipe preparation, fun exercise activities and take-home items including nutrition and fitness tips for the whole family.
  • Junior League of Dallas volunteers participated in YMCA Healthy Kids® Day on April 17, 2010.  The event featured fun, engaging and creative activities for children and families that promotes wellness and healthier living.

Additionally, JLD members will be treated to an appearance by Missy Chase Lapine, “The Sneaky Chef”, at the March 2010 General Membership Meeting. A member of Parenting magazine’s advisory board and longtime cooking instructor, Ms. Lapine has inspired a new culinary category by creating home-cooked meals that include healthy ingredients “sneaked” into a wide variety of dishes that remain decadent and delicious while offering great nutritional benefits.
